George Alexander acted in too many plays to list in a short biography' he played parts in literally dozens of plays in a career that spanned at least three decades. His stage debut was in Nottingham in 1877. After learning his craft, he joined Sir Henry Irving's company at the Lyceum Theatre, London, and there in 1882 he played his first Shakespeare role as Paris in Romeo and Juliet. Over the years he played as Orlando, Romeo, Benedick, Claudio, and Macduff. He began managing his own theatre, but still found time for the occasional part in Shakespeare; he played Orlando in 1896 and Benedick in 1898. He was also quite civic-minded, finding the time to serve on the boards of several charitable funds that aided retired actors.
