Virginia Earle, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, was known as a singer rather than an actress. Her first part on the stage in 1888 was as Nanki-Poo in Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta The Mikado. The only Shakespeare part I am aware of is when she played Ariel in The Tempest in Augustin Daly's production of the play. I suspect she was given the role because she could handily sing Ariel's songs.
