Few people would now recognize the name Margaret Anglin, but she was one of the most popular actresses of her day and over a long career she had roles in dozens of plays. Few seasons passed when she did not have a role in some theatre.

She played her first part in a Shakespeare play when she acted as Ophelia in 1894 in Charles Frohman's company. While on tour in Australia in 1908, she played Katherine in The Taming of the Shrewand Viola in Twelfth Night. In 1913-14 she went on tour with The Taming of the Shrew,Twelfth Night,As You Like It,and Antony and Cleopatra. She returned to New York City in 1914 with the same repertory. She was touring as late as 1943 when she played Sarah Muller in Lillian Hellman's Watch on the Rhine, a popular and patriotic play during World War II.
