The photograph on this card, reproduced with the permission of Mr. Robert J. Foster, is by White of New York City. Miss Cowl appears here in her role in Bayard Veiller's play Within the Law, first published c. 1917.

Jane Cowl was born in Boston in 1890 and made her stage debut in 1903. She was rather late coming to Shakespeare, playing Juliet for the first time at the Henry Miller Theatre in 1923--but late or not, she scored a critical triumph and played the part for 157 consecutive performances. Daniel Blum says she was the actress who broke records by playing Juliet, all told, more than 900 times (74).

Her performances go beyond our limit of 1914, but a record such as Jane Cowl's in Romeo and Juliet cannot go without notice. She later played Cleopatra (1924) and Viola in Twelfth Night (1930).
