William Faversham was born in London, but he spent much of his time in the United States, debuting in New York in 1887 after his first stage appearance in London in 1885. His first role in Shakespeare was as Romeo with Maude Adams as Juliet in 1901. He did not play another Shakespeare part until 1912 when he took the role of Marc Antony in Julius Caesar; he toured in 1913 and 1914, playing Marc Antony, Romeo, and Iago. He returned to the United States after this Australian tour, and in 1931 played Antonio in The Merchant of Venice, Claudius in Hamlet, and the soothsayer in Julius Caesar.
In 1915 he appeared in his first film, The Right of Way, and he proved a successful film actor. He made, all told, twelve motion pictures, the last one in 1937.
