In 1843 Eug¿ne Delacroix published a series of thirteen lithographs based on Hamlet. I have in Shakespeare Illustrated for the most part ignored American and continental artists, but Delacroix's illustrations are of particular interest because they were probably known by Ford Madox Brown and influenced his series of drawings for King Lear (1843-4). ¿Delacroix saw an English production of the play in Paris in 1827, with Charles Kemble as Hamlet and Harriet Smithson in the part of Ophelia.
