Although he tried his hand at other genres, Harlow is noted primarily as a painter of portraits; many of these are portraits of actors and actresses. He worked for a short time in the studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence, but their relationship ended in disagreement. His first painting exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1804 was a portrait, now lost.
