Leslie was actually an American born in London, and after returning to America he did not go back to London until 1811, when he entered the Royal Academy schools. After producing several popular pictures he was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1826. His specialty was historical paintings based chiefly on literature; he did a number of paintings derived from Shakespeare's plays, but he is noted for a series of paintings of characters from Don Quixote.
