John Neagle (1796-1865)

    Neagle was born in Boston but spent his professional career in Philadelphia where he was a popular painter of portraits. In 1826 he was given a commission to paint portraits of popular actors and actresses in costume. These were then to serve as the sources for engravings to illustrate a series of books. He completed in all twenty-four portraits. Most of them are now owned by the Players Club in New York City.
