William Quiller Orchardson, Jessica (1877)

Oil on canvas, size unknown, Private collection.

In The Merchant of Venice, Act II, Scene v, Shylock gives Jessica the keys to the house before he leaves. Here we see her with the keys hanging from her belt; soon she will disguise herself as a boy and elope with Lorenzo--taking with her a goodly amount of Shylock's property.
