Back of Maude Fealy in “Becket”

This image depicts the back of a postcard, brown and visibly aged, with cursive script handwritten in blue-gray pencil. The words “POST CARD” in typed black capital letters sit above a black, printed double line that divides the card in half. In the upper left corner is a small, black Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom flanked by the words “By appointment to Her late Majesty.” In the upper right corner is a light green and white “halfpenny” postage stamp, slightly askew. A circular postmark is stamped over it in black ink. Along the top of the postmark’s circular border, a partially visible word reads, “SHEFF—S. D. C,” and the center of the circle reads, “6. AM, OC 26, 05.” On the right side of the postcard’s dividing line, an address is written in a rounded, loose cursive in three lines: Mr FeBast, 198 Rock St, Pitsmoor.” On the left side of the dividing line, typed black capital print reads: “FOR INLAND POSTAGE ONLY” and, below that in lowercase print, “This space may now be used for communications.” Below this, the same cursive handwriting fills the space; it has been written sideways, in lines parallel to the left edge of the postcard. Below a salutation, “Dear F,” the body of the message reads: “So sorry I cannot go to the dance tomorrow but had made other arrangements thinking you would not be able to go. We shall have to postpone it until a fortnight.” It is signed underneath with flowing capital initials, “B.H.” A postscript has been written in a small open space at the top of the card, above body of the writing. It reads as follows: “P.S. We are going to the Exhibition will you come if not will see you Sat!” Along the left side of the postcard, black typed text reads: “A & G.TAYLORs “Reality Series” of Copyright Pictorial PostCards. 70 & 78. Queen Victoria St., E.C.; 153. Regent St., W.”
